What is veterinary API?
Veterinary API refers to the API used to produce various veterinary preparations and is the active ingredient in veterinary drugs. These APIs are prepared by chemical synthesis, plant extraction or biotechnology, usually in the form of powder, crystal or extract, but patients cannot take them directly. Veterinary APIs mainly include antimicrobial drugs, antiparasitic drugs, antipyretic analgesic and anti-inflammatory drugs, among which antimicrobial drugs dominate the market, while antiparasitic drugs serve as auxiliary. 12
There are differences in the use of veterinary APIs and preparations, mainly reflected in palatability and water solubility. Most antibiotic APIs have a bitter taste, and directly using the raw powder to mix with feed or drinking water will affect the animals' feeding and drinking. In contrast, preparations can well mask the bitterness through specific process technology and do not affect the animals' feeding and drinking. In addition, not all APIs are suitable for drinking water administration. Some APIs such as florfenicol and enrofloxacin are slightly soluble or insoluble in water and cannot be completely dissolved by drinking water administration.
In order to meet clinical needs, storage and transportation requirements, veterinary raw materials are processed and prepared into veterinary preparations in various forms such as liquid, semi-solid and solid according to different administration forms, including but not limited to powders, premixes, tablets, granules, capsules, pills, powders for injection, lyophilized powder injections, lozenges, solutions, injections, infusions, infusions, mixtures, decoctions, fluid extracts, liniments, tinctures, aerosols, licking agents, ointments, creams, pastes, etc.
